Council has received $1 million in funding from the Australian Government through the Drought Communities Programme Extension for the Maranoa Water Supply Security, Surat and Yuleba Township Project (including two new bores, one in Surat and the other in Yuleba).
Background
Due to ongoing drought conditions, the Balonne River level has seen a significant drop in recent years, which has highlighted the need to have a backup water supply for the town of Surat.
The current allocation from the Balonne River is 350ML (megalitres) per annum. The maximum allocation that we can secure for the new bore is 80ML per annum. Under normal circumstances, the additional bore allocation will supplement the river water allocation throughout the year.
If the river water source is interrupted, Council can apply for an additional 66ML per annum seasonal assignment. It may also be possible to transfer further allocation from the Roma supply, if required. The allocation amount should not be an issue, provided the appropriate flow to the water tower can be achieved.
In June 2020, Council undertook the first community consultation where residents were invited to provide their feedback on the proposed location of the new bore and had the option to provide an alternative location for the new bore in Surat. Council undertook further community consultation after feedback was received for alternative bore locations in August before a final location for the new bore is decided. Council resolved on 12 August 2020 to approve the new bore to be placed at the weather station opposite the water tower.

Council would like to advise Surat and surrounds residents that drilling has been completed on the new Surat bore with an adequate water flow sourced.
A pump test will be undertaken in October 2020 to confirm this and to determine the size of the pump and switch board needed.
